“I never felt love until it came in the form of an unexpected breakfast. I was given a piece of bread on my first morning at a children’s home. I had been taken there after being hospitalised for abuse. That bread symbolised love, kindness and acceptance into a new family – feelings foreign to me. This act of love was one of many by the home’s founders, staff and mentors who dedicated much time nurturing me. Such love gave me incredible strength and hope to overcome past feelings of pain and hurt. It overturned hatred and pain in my life when I grew confident enough to forgive those who abused me. This love has also overflowed to others around me. I have worked in the social sector and, through sports, connect with youths and children with disabilities. In every opportunity, I choose to love others.”
